Walk in the Light

From the desk of Pastor John Greiner

Have you ever walked through a dark room and stubbed your toe on the furniture? If so, that experience became a painful lesson to you to use a flashlight next time! Likewise, God knows how painful life can be for His children who aren't relying on His guidance for them.

His main provision for lighting our pathway is in our spirits. Proverbs says the spirit of man is the lamp of the Lord that sheds light on one's innermost being. Every believer has a divine right to be led by the Holy Spirit, and the primary way He leads is by the inward witness- that illumination, that knowing down on the inside. This same witness is what God uses to let us know we are saved (Jn 8:16). It may not be as spectacular as visions, dreams or audible instructions, but it is no less supernatural. Following the inward witness is the everyday way we walk in the light without "stubbing our toes."

How can we experience this leading? Let's use the simple LED method. LEDs or light emitting diodes are the modern sources of intense light used in traffic signals and other technologies. What a great picture of our guidance from the Lord.

  • LOOK to the Word of God. It is spiritual fuel for your lamp (spirit). Psalm 119 says the Word is a lamp unto your feet and a light to your pathway. Give the Word first priority and find the scripture that applies to your situation.
  • EDIFY your spirit by praying much in other tongues (1 Co 14:4, Jude 20). You are becoming more spiritually charged and strengthened as you pray and you will find it easier to perceive God's leading. When your spirit is strengthened in this way, it will carry more weight than your flesh and even your mind in your everyday decisions.
  • DO what you know to do down in your knower. You've received a green light, so GO in that direction until you get to the next intersection. Remember God gives you enough light to take another step so keep walking one step at a time.
As you apply the LED method you will train your spirit to perceive God's leading in every situation. You will please God as well because you are walking in the light by faith and not by sight.

One way to stir up your faith: remember all the ways God has come through for you in the past. Mull them over in your mind and begin to praise Him again for His faithfulness to you through those times. Now you are ready to search the Word of God about your present challenge. Remember, God promises to minister seed to the sower (2 Cor 9:10), so expect to find ammunition to use against these attacks. Often it's just one God-breathed nugget that you believe and speak over and over that carries you through. Once you have God's Word on the matter, boldly start declaring your victory with rejoicing by "sticking" the enemy with the Word. You'll soon come out of that fire with a victor's crown-one to lie at Jesus' feet.

Poll Question: Does it take a village?

If you see children (not yours) in the church doing something dangerous, should you correct them?

  1. Yes! If someone gets hurt, I'd feel responsible.
  2. Only if you're authorized by the church or their parents.
  3. No! It's the parent's job to correct their children.
Vote today at www.gwc.cc and get our take on the subject.

Last Month Results: 94% of you say the best thing to do when someone bothers, upsets or disappoints you in church is to have a talk with that person, while 4% say to tell someone in leadership and 2% say they'd just leave the church. Thankfully, no one chose the "hit-em" option. Our take: give others the benefit of the doubt when you can, but if you just can't shake a bad vibe, don't let it fester. Gently communicate your true feelings to the offender and get it straight. Jesus says: If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more...And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen...(Matt 18:15-17). Be sure you're willing to forgive him 70 X 7 times (vs 22). See also Eph 4. Gal 6.
